Regioselective hydroborations of methylvinylchlorosilanes

The regioselectivity of the hydroboration of the methylchlorovinylsilanes, Cl_nMe_3?nSiCHCH₂ (n= 0 ? 3), has been investigated using BH₃←THF, 9-BBN, disiamyl- and dicyclohexylborane. Methylation of the adducts with methylmagnesium bromide is complicated by formation of tetraalkylboronates. Alkaline hydrogen peroxide oxidation of the boronates gives reasonable yields of the corresponding α- and β-trimethylsilylethanols forn= 0 and 1. Forn= 2 and 3, conversion of the adducts to the corresponding α- and β- deuteroethylsilanes by treatment with excess sodium methoxide in methanol-0-d provides a more effective means of derivatization. Addition of the alkenes,n= 2 or 3, to excess BH₃←THF givesca. 90% of the α-boro-organo-chlorosilanes. For all of the alkenes, the dialkylboranes giveca. 80% of the β-boron adducts.     

Synthesis, crystal structure, and nonlinear optical behavior of beta-unsubstituted meso-meso E-vinylene-linked porphyrin dimers

[structure: see text] A vinylene-linked porphyrin dimer, with no substituents at the beta-positions, has been synthesized by CuI/CsF promoted Stille coupling. In the crystal structure of this dimer, the C(2)H(2) bridge is twisted by 45 degrees relative to the plane of the porphyrins. The absorption, emission spectra, and electrochemistry reveal substantial porphyrin-porphyrin pi-conjugation. The triplet excited-state absorption spectrum of this dimer makes it suitable for reverse saturable absorption at 710-900 nm.     

Condensed thiophenes and selenophenes: thionyl chloride and selenium oxychloride as sulfur and selenium transfer reagents

3,4-Cyanomethyl substituted thiophenes reacted with thionyl chloride in the presence of base to give dicyano substituted thieno(3,4-c)thiophenes. The use of selenium oxychloride furnished the corresponding cyano substituted seleno(3,4-c)thiophene. 1,2-Phenylenediacetonitriles gave the corresponding cyano substituted benzo(c)thiophenes and benzo(c)selenenophenes, respectively, upon reaction with thionyl chloride and selenium oxychloride in the presence of base.     

Dihydroaromatic compounds in the Diels-Alder reaction—IV : Synthesis of bicyclic ketones

The in situ isomerisation and Diels-Alder reaction with 2-acetoxyacrylonitrile, of 2,5-dihydroanisole, leads to the adducts (1) which may be used as starting point for the synthesis of a number of bicyclo [2,2,2] octenones, bicyclo [3,2,1] octenones and bicyclo [3,2,2] nonenones. Under similar conditions, 2,5-dihydrotoluene reacts via an ene-reaction to produce, after hydrolysis, the acetylcyclohexadiene (27). The base-catalysed equilibration and subsequent Diels-Alder reactions of 2,5-dihydrotoluene have been investigated.     

Printed plastic electronics and paperlike displays

Plastic electronic materials and high‐resolution printing methods may be important technologies for new classes of consumer electronic devices that are lightweight, mechanically flexible and bendable, and that can cover large areas at low cost. This article summarizes some of our recent work in this area. It focuses on the materials and patterning techniques that we used to produce plastic active‐matrix backplane circuits for a type of paperlike display. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. N-substituted salicylaldimine complexes of rhodium(III) and related rhodium(III) organometallic derivatives

A series of new Rh^III complexes with N-substituted salicylaldimines have been prepared of the form [RhSBPy₂]PF₆ where SB is a tetradentate N,N′-substituted bis(salicylaldimine) or represents two molecules of a corresponding bidentate derivative. Several of these complexes have been reduced with 0.5% sodium amalgam and the products reacted with CH₃I to yield the organometallic derivatives CH₃RhSBPy.     

Hydrogenation enthalpimetry--I: microcomputer-assisted calibration and data-acquisition

A calorimetric device is described which permits enthalpimetric determination of unsaturated hydrocarbons through the enthalpy change for their catalytic hydrogenation. Samples with weights from < 1 to about 20 mg can be analysed with a mean error of about 2%. The method makes extensive use of digital electronics and is well suited to routine automated determination of unsaturation. The principal drawback is lack of specificity.     

The electric dipole moment of the hydrogen-bonded heterodimer HCN⋯HF. An investigation of the conditions leading to inadequacy of the second- and fourth-order perturbation theories of the Stark effect for linear molecules

We have detected large deviations of the M_J = 0, J = 2 ← 1 Stark effect transition in the linear molecule HCN?HF from predictions of second-, and even fourth-, order perturbation theory. In order to account satisfactorily for the observed effect it has been necessary to set up and diagonalize the appropriate energy matrix. Smaller deviations in the case of M_J = 1, J = 2 ← 1 have likewise been treated. The values of the electric dipole moment for HCN?HF calculated from these transitions, which show large and small deviations from second-order theory, and from one (M_J = 3, J = 4 ← 3) which shows effectively zero deviation, are now consistent and are as follows:
